The Christian Response to Communism

July 22, 2020 by Sarah Neufeld Leave a Comment

christian response to communism

Part 1 – Summary

In Part 1 of this episode, we take a look at the problematic elements of this marxist ideology from a Christian perspective; specifically, its atheism.

Which political parties share these views, and does this have an impact on how we vote?

How does the rise of Socialism impact the Christian church?

We unpack the answer to these questions here.

Dream Big by Bob Goff – My Personal Review

June 22, 2020 by Sarah Neufeld 2 Comments

(Please note that as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.)

So the first half of 2020 has been crazy, unsettling and, to be quite frank, really disappointing. But the story doesn’t end here. The new Dream Big by Bob Goff releases on June 23rd. And this is the message he has for the world – “know what you want, why you want it, and what you’re going to do about it.” Step aside COVID-19, there are a great many dreams and miracles about to manifest!

Why should you dream big with Bob Goff?

I first discovered Bob Goff during an interview on the Glenn Beck radio program. As part of the launch of his second book, Everybody Always, he was sharing one of the most incredible stories I had ever heard.

A lawyer, Bob won a landmark case in Uganda convicting a witch doctor of kidnapping and mutilating a child as part of a ritual sacrifice. The details of the story are very sensitive and difficult, but if you want to hear more of this story, you can watch Bob’s interview on 100 Huntley Street here.

What struck me was how this man who had literally looked evil in the face could have such a light hearted and joyful nature. But that is Bob.

In the book, he describes some of the highs and lows he has experienced while pursuing his lofty ambitions.

We’ve brought leaders together in countries riddled with conflict only to have our meetings raided. I’ve been detained, held in jail, and even kicked out of a country for freeing children held in brothels. We’ve started schools in war zones that completely failed and other schools that shouldn’t have worked but did.

I consider Bob Goff to be an inspiring and fascinating person to learn from. So when I read his tweet that people could apply to join the launch team for his new book, I wasted no time to put my obscure and unqualified name in. (To this day, I’m still not sure how I made the cut!)

Dream Big by Bob Goff

In Dream Big, Bob Goff raises the right questions.

I initially started taking notes for the benefit of this review, but jotted down mostly personal thoughts instead. Because Dream Big draws you into the deeply personal and introspective.

How amazing would it be to understand why we do things? This book, along with the reflection questions at the end, will help you do just that.

Who are you? Where are you? What do you want?

The gentle but firm promptings in this book guide us towards understanding the answer to these three questions and more.

Explore the utility of your experiences, debunk the excuses you are weaponizing against your own success, and examine how you can minimize the clutter in your headspace.

How does Dream Big actually help you achieve your ambitions?

Where you are today is simply the harbour from which your ship is about to sail. Cut loose the lines. The horizon is where you’re heading because it’s where your ambitions reside.

Imagine that you are embarking on an expedition.

Consider this book as the roadmap gifted to you by a seasoned explorer.

Bob isn’t blazing the trail for you, because it’s your journey to tread. But, he is equipping you with the steps, resources and all of the encouragement you need to succeed.

In Dream Big, Bob Goff lays out how to prepare, determine your goals, examine the possibilities, launch and land.

Where dreaming big meets infinite grace.

Take a look at what Jesus had on His list of ambitions and lift a few onto yours.

How much time have we wasted by misreading cues?

Have we been misinterpreting the Holy Spirit?

Are we being invited into something and not responding?

Bob asks us to examine a lot of the hard things. His questions cut clear through all the meaningless excess to the things that matter.

What have we filled our life with?

Have we left room for Jesus?

Have we cultivated a life that allows us to live purposefully while staying in obedience to what God has asked us to do?

I appreciate that Dream Big by Bob Goff examines the prospect of ambitions from a lens of grace.

What decisions do we make, or what goals do we pursue, in light of the unmerited favour we have received?

Dream Big by Bob Goff

It’s time to dream big!

I’m a meat-and-potatoes guy when it comes to faith. I don’t see ladybugs landing on my nose as a message from God. I’m confident if God had a message for me and I missed it, He knows where I live and would send an elephant to land on me next time.

Don’t let Bob’s whimsical sense of humour fool you; the truth in this book is powerful.

He challenges us (like in his other books) to navigate the world fuelled with the love of Jesus. It’s counterintuitive to what most of us know and were taught.

So even though the chapters aren’t overly long and are written with a light-hearted style, you cannot rush this book. If you do, you will miss out on a treasure trove of gems!

I already know that I am certainly going to read Dream Big by Bob Goff again. I want to take my time to savour each chapter like a cup of coffee, so I can go deeper with the included reflection questions; as I haven’t been in therapy for years, it should be good!

Dream Big releases June 23rd, but you can still pre-order today!

For me, I’m grateful to have this valuable guide for the road to ambition that points back to Jesus at every turn.

She Is Priceless – Campaign 2020

May 11, 2020 by Sarah Neufeld 1 Comment

she is priceless
(Please note that as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.)

For the last 5 years, Mercy House Global has held the She Is Priceless campaign in May. The objective? To raise funds to rescue pregnant teens from the slums in Kenya.

Have you ever felt forgotten? Has the overwhelm of a crisis left you so depressed and disillusioned that it was hard to breathe?

Do you ever have that longing to have someone scoop you up, broken heart included, and reassure you that you matter – that you are worth it?

I know I have. And I’d guess many of you have, too.

She is forgotten.

she is priceless

But imagine what it would be like to grow up in the largest slum in the world; especially as a girl.

Envision a life that doesn’t extend more than a few miles beyond the little tin hut you call home; the one infested with rats and bugs, with sewage water flowing through every time it rains.

You have several siblings. Your father may be present, but there’s a good chance he’s not. You watch your mother, worn and worried, do everything she can to put food on the table; skipped meals are the norm.

Most Western girls grow up with grand dreams for their life. But in the slums, you know it will be very difficult to secure a dignified job that pays a fair wage.

If there’s barely enough money for food, then there’s nothing leftover for school fees. Besides, you’re just a girl; your education isn’t a priority.

Even if you are bold enough to dream, you know there’s very little hope of them ever coming to be.

From here, any number of tragedies could await you.

One sure way for a female to earn some money is through prostitution. This is no life for a young girl like yourself, but you may find yourself in that place.

Maybe your mother has broken down through desperation and is insisting you sell yourself for sex. But perhaps your own sense of guilt and responsibility has left you with no other option.

A girl might be spared the sentence of being trafficked for sex, but there are other threats than can await her.

The slums are a very dangerous place. Therefore, forcible rape is very common.

Abused, exploited, trafficked, raped – now pregnant.

Do you feel forgotten yet? Do you in anyway feel loved?

She is loved.

she is priceless

This describes the life of too many a girl in Kenya.

13,000 Kenyan girls have been kicked out of school for being pregnant (Centre for Reproductive Rights).

25% of pregnant girls women in Kenya are HIV positive (ObGyn in Kenya).

Every 30 minutes, a woman is raped in Kenya (Nairobi Women’s Hospital)

Mothers often force their daughters into trading sex for food in the slums (CNN)

Where is the hope, the mercy or the justice for these girls?

Even if the culture has marginalized them, or the society has oppressed them, or the rest of us in the free and prosperous world have forgotten them, God has remembered them.

God brought blogger, Kristen Welch, to Kenya on a trip with Compassion. And she faced the harsh realities of life in the slums.

At every turn, I only saw hopelessness. I wanted to shut it all out. I was so angry and silently accused God. Where are You? These are Your people; You created them. How can You allow so much suffering?

For a moment, time stood still. I stopped and closed my eyes. I saw God’s finger pointed at my chest as He asked my spirit the same question: “Kristen, how can you allow this?”

In that exact moment, I knew my life would never be the same.

“Rhinestone Jesus” by Kristen Welch

Mercy House Global, founded by Kristen, is celebrating their 10th anniversary this year.

In the last decade, they have established three maternity homes in Kenya. They have also rescued 54 pregnant girls between the ages of 12-16.

When each teen arrives “home,” she quickly learns that she is loved.

Through the program, the girls also receive proper medical care, healing support, resources to help them embrace motherhood, and a chance to complete their education, and yes, dream big dreams!

She is priceless.

she is pricless

God took one “yes,” and launched a movement to empower marginalized and oppressed women, which has spread around the world.

No one tells this saga of miracles better than Kristen herself. (I highly recommend reading “Rhinestone Jesus” and “Made to Move Mountains“!)

She is not only loved by God, she is priceless to Him.

He could have solved all of the problems with a wave of His righteous right hand, but instead, He has woven women, like you and me, into this miracle of redemption.

When you look into the darkness other people live in, and you allow it to recalibrate your perspective, it creates fertile ground for God to grow amazing fruit through your life.

I hope reading this has grounded your outlook a bit, and brought some new gratitude into your life. We all need this!

Four years ago, God used the We Are That Family blog to give my head a shake. And through sponsoring one of these moms, God changed my heart.

And so, I leaped at the chance to represent this organization as a Mercy House Ambassador one year ago.

My friend, it is truly our privilege to share what we’ve been given. As the hands and feet of Jesus, the ambassadors of His love and heart, we are called to show mercy and stand up for justice.

Though the 2020 rescues have been postponed due to the coronavirus, Mercy House is looking to raise two months of operation costs for the maternity homes.

Today, I am humbly asking you to join the She Is Priceless campaign and help them raise the $70,000. That way, when the restrictions are lifted, their front-line team will be positioned to bring some precious girls home!

Please visit my support campaign, and donate an amount of any sum.

Trusting God at His Word on Controversial Verses

May 4, 2020 by Sarah Neufeld Leave a Comment

A Series on Trusting God at His Word

So I want you to know, straight out of the gate, that this is one of the hardest episodes I’ve had to prepare for. In fact, it revealed to me that I struggle with trusting God at His Word.

Because we live in a world where we are pressured to identify ourselves by our culture, rather than the Word of God, this is the time to get rooted in our identity and build on right beliefs.

Therefore I’m excited, and a wee bit nervous, to introduce a new podcast series on Trusting God at His Word.

For today, we focus specifically on a selection of controversial verses in the Bible.

Here, I review the verses and discuss some of the topics at a high level only.

In future episodes, we dive deeper into the Biblical context of Christian marriage, tithing, unpopular beliefs (as they pertain to abortion, gender, LGBTQ, feminism and more), as well as the worldly voices that we listen to.

As you listen to this podcast, ask yourself how much do you trust God; I mean really.

Do you trust God at His Word enough to:

  • submit to your husband?
  • tithe, even when money is limited?
  • stand with the unpopular? (And by that I’m referring to the unpopular opinion, as well.)
  • stop listening to the voices of the world before I go into any more detail?

These are challenging questions that I have posed myself, and I hope you will, too.

The Verses

Because I believe people should do their own homework, here is a list of the verses discussed in this episode. For the full passage, follow the links to Biblegateway.com.

  • “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” – Ephesians 5:22-24
  • “Honour the Lord with your wealth” – Proverbs 3:9-10
  • “Do not be conformed to this world” – Romans 12:2
  • “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” – Matthew 5:43-45
  • “male and female he created them.” – Genesis 1:27
  • “Did not he who made me in the womb make them?” – Job 31:15
  • “the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God (…) neither the sexually immoral, (…) nor men who practice homosexuality,” – 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
  • “How long will you go limping between two different opinions?” – 1 Kings 18:21

Love Without Borders – An Honest Book Review

April 28, 2020 by Sarah Neufeld Leave a Comment

love without borders
(Please note that as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.)

It’s the coffee date with Angie that you always wanted! Through her new book “Love Without Borders,” Angela Braniff shares a testimony that will draw you near to God, and empower you to live the story that God has written for you.

Meet the Author of “Love Without Borders”

love without borders

Hundreds of thousands of people have learned to love the Braniff family through their YouTube channel, This Gathered Nest. At the centre of it all is Angie.

She is the mom of 8 children “through various means of adoption and biological approaches.”

She is also a homeschooler, digital content creator, entrepreneur, makeup fanatic, influencer, advocate for adoption, children with down syndrome and supporting the foster care system. And NOW she is a newly published author!

Behind the high quality videography, the quirky humour, and relatable content, there is a real family navigating highs and lows. Just like everybody else.

In “Love Without Borders,” Angela, who is already fairly transparent with her online community, pulls the curtain back even further.

My life had always been about making other people happy and trying to maintain the status quo. God was opening my eyes to a life that looked different, perhaps even weird, but something about it all just felt right. Now I was seeing what could be possible, what it could look like to have the kind of life that didn’t allow fear to be in the driver’s seat, the kind of the life that walked the walk rather than just talking the talk. This was my peek into what it might be like to lay down the dreams I’d been sold, for the chance to follow Jesus and perhaps find the life I’d been missing all this time.

A Journey that Goes Beyond Borders

Angela invites us into the hard seasons she and her husband CR have navigated through; high-risk pregnancies, domestic and international adoption, secondary infertility, embryo adoption and a season of depression.

It’s hard to relive these details as I tell this story. I want so badly to be able to tell you that I had complete faith in God, that I trusted He’d protect the baby, or that I handled it all with grace. But I also know I’m a flawed woman. There is no place of darkness so far that He can’t reach us, no place of fear or doubt that He can’t find us, no ugly side of our sinful nature that He can’t redeem.

Her friendly writing style feels like she is reaching across the table at the local Starbucks, speaking life into your own hard and weary days.

The Purpose of “Love Without Borders”

love without borders

At few months ago, Angela said that “she was going first.”

I was intrigued and my impatience to read this book increased. By the final few chapters, I not only understood what she meant, but why we needed “Love Without Borders.”

Angela Braniff connects with the longing in a woman’s heart.

What is your longing? Is it for motherhood, a larger family, a worthy legacy, a life of purpose, stronger faith or that “something more”?

Angela shows how giving God your “yes” in the impossible days is the only way to fulfill that yearning.

Her courageous vulnerability is a blessing, because she shows us the beautiful redemptive work God has done in her life. And that is the most precious gift that any author could endow their reader.

I don’t walk away from reading “Love Without Borders” thinking that Angie is some enhanced breed of Superwoman. Nor do I think that she has the perfect marriage or the perfect life.

I feel unworthy of the good things that have happened to us, but I’ve come to realize that feeling unworthy is actually a good thing. We don’t earn our blessings, and we certainly don’t deserve them; it’s only by His grace that we receive them.

Instead, I see a woman, who has experienced heartache. And she has come to the other side knowing exactly who her Father in heaven is.

Through her story, Angela goes first and shows us “how bold faith opens the door to embracing the unexpected.”

So, this is for the sister with the deep-seated longing in her heart. Order “Love Without Borders,” stock up on your favourite hot beverage (and kleenex) and dive into this book!

We don’t need to know what’s on the other side of every door He opens for us, we just need to trust Him.

My Birthday in Quarantine: Celebration & Grief

April 24, 2020 by Sarah Neufeld Leave a Comment

my birthday in quarantine

It’s my birthday today. I would tell you what day of quarantine it is, but I can’t remember. How has my birthday in quarantine gone? Well, to be brutally honest, a birthday during a national shutdown is an introvert’s paradise. I’ve done my best to boycott my last two birthdays.

It’s not the whole “getting older” thing… although marking 35 years on this earth doesn’t seem possible. After 3 and half decades of living, I still think I am 28.

My birthdays bring out my introverted side. Yes, I talk a lot, I choose transparency when possible, and I put myself out there at ridiculous frequency. But I am a driven-analytical, so being alone with my thoughts nourishes my soul like church.

Every year on this day, I wake up in an unshakable mood of reflection and introspection. This is why the birthday parties and fanfare are not my jam. Truthfully, they trigger my anxiety like crazy.

So today, post-peak of what will likely be known as the Great Global Pandemic, I couldn’t be happier to spend my birthday in quarantine, grounded with four of my most favourite people on earth; my husband and my three little men.

I crave the flexibility to withdraw to the quiet, while still being with my family. And I receive each text and FB message as words of affirmation, because it is my love language, after all.

I have savoured all the things; the leftover chinese, the strawberry shortcake, the peppermint tea, the hugs & kisses, the homemade cards from my 6 and 4 year old, the birthday songs, and the whole “being us” thing that has blessed me beyond my dreams!

I’d rather be present with all that has enriched me, than be enriched with presents and distracted from the things that matter most.

On My Birthday, I’m Grieving.

Yet as Kevin has noticed my especial quietness today, I cannot deny that my reflection expands beyond reviewing the past year or what I once imagined life would be like, back when I was 25.

My state of thankfulness, affected with a twinge of melancholy, comes from a building sense of sadness, because as the dearest around me celebrates my birthday, I am grieving.

I hold tight every sincere greeting I receive, yet my heart is breaking for my country and for the church.

An Instagram post sat in draft all last night. As my heavy eyelids betrayed me, I feverishly tried to find a way to share what’s on my heart…without actually saying it. 16 hours later, it remains unpublished.

Do I care so much of what people think? Or do I not trust you enough to receive my words?

At the end of the day, I have no control over what anyone thinks of me or what I have to say. So there is a painful ridiculousness to my chronic hesitation.

Perhaps you won’t like it. Perhaps you’ll disagree. Should I not take the risk that your reaction may in fact be the opposite?

Ultimately, I am not here writing about the awkward or controversial to win your favour. My desire is to be obedient; even if the flesh isn’t as willing as the spirit. So here goes.

On my birthday in quarantine, amid all that makes me happy, I am grieving for my country, and I am deeply worried for the church.

I cannot possibly unpack it all in one blog post or one podcast episode.

The depth and complexity of all that troubles me could fill a book, which is why it is so hard to present you with a “cliff notes” version.

The Quarantine Reveals What’s Coming

my birthday in quarantine

I see things coming on the horizon; I have for a while.

As a former missionary kid who grew up in Europe in the 90’s, who broke bread with survivors of Nazism and escapees of Communism and Islamic oppression, and listened to the book of Revelation as a bedtime story (not my choice), it isn’t surprising that I have long dreaded ever living through dark days of history myself.

Those 8 years helped form the principles I cling to, along with my faith in the voracity of the Word of God.

I have seen and heard enough of the hard, the uncomfortable and the inconvenient to know that my opinions will never be infallible.

The 2016 U.S. election gave me the courage to look at the flaws of the ideological right instead of exclusively the left; although those are still glaringly obvious.

And so with a humble degree of wisdom, I understand what King Solomon meant when he wrote:

“For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief.”

Ecclesiastes 1:18

There are threats facing the remnant of free nations that goes beyond the coronavirus we speak of incessantly. There are dangers facing the church in North America that most believers understand in theory, but fewer recognize in practice.

Two separate issues that are intricately entwined to the same problem; one worldview that seeks to exalt itself above God.

The unsaved world doesn’t recognize it as a threat; a faction of the church has so compromised their beliefs that they don’t either.

I listen to the proceedings in the House of Commons, as well as the long succession of press conferences. I scan through a myriad of self-righteous tweets; my hope plummets further in the comment threads.

Identify Your Principles, then Never Let Go

It took me over 30 years to learn this, but these days I listen more, and talk less.

I try to feel for the proverbial pulse of Canadian society, as well as the modern day church. And I worry.

I celebrate the freedom of thought and speech more than my own birthday. Therefore, I believe that a difference of opinion is not only permissible, it is essential.

And yet, deep within me, I fear that there are more who have no sense of what is coming than those who do.

How do I end this post in a way that leaves you with hope, instead of being a Debbie Downer?

This isn’t going to be the day that I attempt to talk about socialism, or the consequences of leftist ideologues in power. Neither is this the day that I launch my series on trusting God at His Word in the context of 21st century identity politics.

So instead, I will leave you with an optional assignment.

4 years ago, I heeded the warning of a man I consider to be a mentor in this field; though he is unaware of my existence. He presented a challenge to all of those who would heed his words.

This changed my life in tremendous good ways. And so on my birthday in quarantine, I pass it on to you:

Identify your principles, then never let go of them.

At a critical time in history, the great leader and giant-slayer Joshua gave this mandate to the people of Israel:

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve (…) But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Joshua 24:15

My Challenge to You

my birthday in quarantine

Take the time to accurately name your values and beliefs.

Do you trust God or not? Do you believe in the Word of God or not? Are your loyalties to the gospel or to ideas?

And should you choose to serve the Lord, do not compromise, no matter what happens.

Don’t do this unless you are ready for the commitment, because it won’t be easy in this age of polarization. But then again, standing on the right side of history never has been.

I pray for God’s blessing of peace and gift of wisdom over every reader who makes it through these difficult 1343 words.

I’m not the only one spending my birthday in quarantine. So if that’s you too, I send you my most heartfelt best wishes for this next year of your life!
