“Rescue me, too.”
Three powerful words spoken by a woman who was broken from hopelessness.
When she mustered up the courage to make this plea to Kristen Welch (founder of Mercy House Global), she was advocating for herself. She couldn’t have known the number of mothers (turned grandmothers) who were crying the same words right alongside her.
This is an incredible story, and it is best told in the author’s own words.
I have thought about her clawing her way up the dirt hill to her small, oppressive hut, and the other children in her home. I have thought about her longing for a job. I have thought of how she converted to the Muslim faith for her husband and how he left her long ago. I have thought of the shame that came with a pregnant teen and how her faith community abandoned her. And no matter how hard I try, I can’t erase the memory of rescuing her daughter and leaving her behind.

There is good ending to this story; a miraculous one, in fact.
Miujiza is the Swahili word for “miracles.”
Miriam, along with some other mothers/grandmothers, joined an artisan group called Miujiza.
These women, oppressed by generational poverty, hopeless from the challenge of providing or their families, mothers to the teen moms who’ve been rescued from the slums, these women are now master weavers!
They have been trained to operate large wooden looms creating these beautiful flat woven rugs and throws; each throw taking 5 days to make!
These soft, high quality textiles, come in the colours of chocolate, paprika, mustard, raspberry, maroon, navy, and black & neutral. They are woven into three different sizes: 2′ x 3′, 3′ x 5′ & 4′ x 6′.

She has a great expectation of good for her life because she has been empowered in Jesus’ name. She has a spring of hope in her heart and the sustainable means to care for her family thanks to fair trade shopping.
